THE POWERFUL NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES: DAY 7 – (FOR ALL THOSE WHO ARE SICK OR FACING ANY HEALTH CHALLNGE(S) THIS PERIOD AND THOSE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ILLNESS)

In these troubled times when, because of the variants of coronavirus, many are sick and dying in different parts of the world, many are dead already, many are concerned for the future; let us ask the Lord that through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, that He may grant us renewed confidence, hope, protection, healing, and peace in our hearts. For she is the smile of God, the reflection of the light of Christ, the home of the Holy Spirit, the morning star, the gate to heaven etc. Let us, therefore, pray and entrust our lives to our Immaculate Mother at this time when so many men and women have lost faith and trust in God and jettisoned their Catholic faith as a result of the fear of the virus. We, therefore, call upon our Lady of Lourdes to assist and heal the sick as she once did at Lourdes and still does every day in our lives; may she also assist all those who care for the sick, welcome those who have died and comfort their families.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

ACT OF CONTRITION

Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all, because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

INTRODUCTORY PRAYER

Ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, we call upon you as Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, and Comfort of the Afflicted. You know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a sanctuary whence you dispense your favours, and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and physical. I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests (mention them here). Through gratitude for favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues that I may one day share your glory.

MEDITATION: THE STORY OF LOURDES

(Part 7 – The Apparitions. Contd.)

The Sixteenth Apparition – Thursday, March 25, 1858 (the Lady finally reveals her name)

During the sixteenth apparition, which occurred on the Feast of the Annunciation, the Beautiful Lady revealed her identity to Bernadette: “Que soy era Immaculado Conception” (I am the Immaculate Conception). Bernadette was not sure what this name meant, but people who needed no explanation flocked to Lourdes in greater numbers than ever before. Baron Massy, a local official, ordered Bernadette to be examined by three more physicians. They found her to be physically and mentally sound.

The Seventeenth Apparition – Wednesday, April 7, 1858 (the miracle of the candle)

Bernadette had never failed to bring a lighted candle to the Grotto since the first time she had been instructed to do so by the Beautiful Lady. During this apparition, she unconsciously placed one of her hands over the flame of the candle. People witnessed the flame burning through her fingers. Bernadette did not even hear the cries of horror which arose from the crowd. She continued to pray for at least fifteen minutes while the flame burned through her hand. She emerged quietly from prayer unscathed. Then Dr. Dozous took another candle and, without warning, touched the flame to her hand. Bernadette immediately cried out in pain. Shortly after this apparition, the Prefect of the city took matters into his own hands and ordered the Grotto closed, and the rustic altar was dismantled.

The Eighteenth Apparition – Friday, July 16, 1858 (the final apparition)

Bernadette seemed relieved that she was becoming less of a public figure. Several months had passed, and after receiving communion on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Bernadette felt an irresistible urge to return to the Grotto. Since the barricade was still in place, she and her aunt could not get as close to the sacred spot as they wanted, so they knelt in the grass, and the Beautiful Lady appeared to her one last time. In her words: “I felt that I was in front of the Grotto, at the same distance as before, I saw only the Blessed Virgin, and she was more beautiful than ever!”
