THE POWERFUL NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES: DAY 3 – (FOR ALL THOSE WHO TREAT AND CARE FOR THE SICK AT THIS TIME)

In these troubled times when, because of the variants of coronavirus, many are sick and dying in different parts of the world, many are dead already, many are concerned for the future; let us ask the Lord that through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, that He may grant us renewed confidence, hope, protection, healing, and peace in our hearts. For she is the smile of God, the reflection of the light of Christ, the home of the Holy Spirit, the morning star, the gate to heaven etc. Let us, therefore, pray and entrust our lives to our Immaculate Mother at this time when so many men and women have lost faith and trust in God and jettisoned their Catholic faith as a result of the fear of the virus. We, therefore, call upon our Lady of Lourdes to assist and heal the sick as she once did at Lourdes and still does every day in our lives; may she also assist all those who care for the sick, welcome those who have died and comfort their families.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

ACT OF CONTRITION

Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all, because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

INTRODUCTORY PRAYER

Ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, we call upon you as Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, and Comfort of the Afflicted. You know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a sanctuary whence you dispense your favours, and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and physical. I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests (mention them here). Through gratitude for favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues that I may one day share your glory.

MEDITATION: THE STORY OF LOURDES

(Part 3 – The Apparitions)

The Second Apparition – Sunday, February 14, 1858 (Holy Water)

Bernadette felt an inner force drawing her to the Grotto in spite of the fact that she was forbidden to go there by her parents. At her insistence, her mother allowed her. So the three little girls started out, armed with a vial of holy water. If what their elders said was true, they might need this to ward off malign influences. After the first decade of the Rosary, she saw the same lady appearing. Instead of throwing the water at the Lady, Bernadette poured the water quietly on the ground. Then she turned and told her companion that, judging by the Beautiful Lady’s smile, She was pleased by this action; then she vanished. When Toinette reached the cachot (home) and poured out her story, her mother seized a switch and headed for the site. By now the whole town was talking. Fortunately for the unhappy little Bernadette, one local woman of considerable prominence interpreted the apparitions in a different light from most of the townspeople. She got Louise’s permission to let her daughter Bernadette accompany her and a friend to the grotto.

The Third Apparition – Thursday, February 18, 1858 (The Lady speaks)

All three went first to early Mass. Then they set out for the grotto. Madame Millet carried a blessed candle; Antoinette Peyret a pen, paper and ink to record anything that might be said. For the first time, the Lady spoke to them, Bernadette held out a pen and paper asking her to write her name. She replied; “It is not necessary” and she added: “I do not promise to make you happy in this world but in the other. Would you be kind enough to come here consistently for a fortnight (fifteen days)?” No explicit reason was given for this request, but a definite pledge accompanied it: though she did not promise that Bernadette would be happy in the world, the Beautiful Lady gave her word that happiness would be waiting in heaven.

The Fourth Apparition – Friday, February 19, 1858 (The first candle)
The next day, Bernadette’s parents became curious; they and her aunt accompanied her to the Grotto along with some neighbours. Bernadette came to the Grotto with a lighted blessed candle. Shortly after Bernadette began to pray the Rosary, everyone present noticed that her face was transfigured and illuminated.

The Fifth Apparition – Saturday, February 20, 1858 (The secret prayer)
On her fifth visit, the Beautiful Lady taught Bernadette a prayer, which she recited daily for the rest of her life. She never revealed the prayer to anyone, but she did say that she was told to always bring a blessed candle with her (from her previous apparition). This is the origin of carrying candles and lighting them in front of the Grotto. Candles now burn perpetually at the Shrine.

DAY THREE PRAYER

You are all fair, O Mary, and there is in you no stain of original sin. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. O brilliant star of sanctity, as on that lovely day, upon a rough rock in Lourdes you spoke to the child Bernadette and a fountain broke from the plain earth and miracles happened and the great shrine of Lourdes began, so now I beseech you to hear our fervent prayer and do, we beseech you, grant us the petition we now so earnestly seek (make your request). O Brilliant star of purity, Mary Immaculate, Our Lady of Lourdes, glorious in your assumption, triumphant in your coronation, show unto us the mercy of the Mother of God, Virgin Mary, Queen and Mother, be our comfort, hope, strength, and consolation. Today, I light a blessed candle in Lourdes for my intentions, the intentions of those I ought to pray for and the intentions of those I promised to pray for.
May our lady look favourable on our prayers and bring us answers from heaven. Amen
