POWERFUL NOVENA TO THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: DAY 1

INTRODUCTION: The veneration of the Precious Blood of Our Divine Saviour dates back to the time of the Passion when it was shed. It is rooted in the fundamental doctrine of the Incarnation, which teaches that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity assumed a human nature, uniting it with His divine nature in what is known as the hypostatic union. Thus, every aspect of Christ’s human nature, including His Precious Blood, is inseparably united with the second divine Person. Consequently, the Precious Blood is worthy of the same adoration, known as Latria, that is given to God Himself. This devotion to the Precious Blood is not reliant on private revelations but finds its firm foundation in the deposit of the Faith. Moving into more recent times, St. Gaspar Buffalo, the founder of the Congregation of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, played a significant role in promoting devotion to the Precious Blood. During Pope Pius IX’s exile from Rome in 1849, his companion, Don Giovanni Merlini, the third general of the Congregation, suggested that if the Pope were to regain the papal territory, he should make a vow to extend the Feast of the Precious Blood to the entire Church. This Feast had already been celebrated by the Fathers of the Most Precious Blood on the Friday after the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Ultimately, it was Pope Pius IX who officially instituted a special feast in honor of the Precious Blood. Later, Pope St. Pius X moved the feast from the first Sunday of July to July 1st. Finally, in commemoration of the 19th centennial of the mystery of the Redemption, Pope Pius XI elevated the rank of the feast day. This highlights the enduring significance and importance of devotion to the Precious Blood throughout the history of the Church.

Day 1

Opening Prayer: O Lord Jesus Christ, we come before You in adoration and thanksgiving for the immeasurable gift of Your Precious Blood, poured out for our redemption. As we begin this Novena, we offer ourselves to You, seeking forgiveness for our sins and the grace to be transformed by Your saving Blood. Be pleased to hear our humble petitions (State your intentions). Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, may this Novena draw us closer to You and deepen our love and devotion to Your Precious Blood. Amen.

Scriptural Reading/Meditation: (Hebrews 9:11-14)

“11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”

The Word of the Lord…

Dear friends in Christ, this is a powerful passage that reflects on the significance of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ in the context of His role as the ultimate High Priest and the efficacy of His sacrifice for our redemption. We are reminded of the immeasurable value of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ and the gift of salvation it brings. During the Precious Blood Novena, let us take time to thank and praise God for the incomparable sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, and seek His cleansing and transformation in our lives through the power of His Precious Blood. May we grow in love and devotion to our Lord, who gave Himself entirely for our sake, that we may live in communion with the living God and experience the fullness of His grace.

Concluding Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, during this Novena, we contemplate the power and significance of Your Precious Blood. As we journey through these nine days of prayer, we humbly ask for the continued outpouring of Your mercy and love upon us. Grant us the grace to be ever mindful of the price You paid for our salvation, and may we always seek refuge in the shelter of Your Precious Blood. We make this prayer through the intercession of Mary, our Mother, and all the saints. Amen.
