NOVENA TO SAINT RITA OF CASCIA, PATRONESS OF IMPOSSIBLE CASES: DAY 3 – (For the mothers of difficult children and teenagers)

O God, come to my aid+
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

The widowed spouse and wedded wife
The way to heaven was seen in her life;
The way secure our Rita trod,
In life’s dim day, through pains o God.

Praise to the Father and the Son,
Praise to the Spirit, Three in One;
O grant us grace in heaven to reign
Through Rita’s prayer and life-long pain.

DAILY PRAYER TO SAINT RITA

O Holy Patroness of those in need, Saint Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favours hast been called the Advocate of the hopeless and even of the Impossible.

Saint Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from him whatsoever thou askest, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee, expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort; be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee.

MEDITATION

Catholic News World : #Novena Prayer to St. Rita - Patron of Impossible Cases - SHARE Miracle Prayer(The Story of Saint Rita: Part III)

Death of husband and sons

As stated already, Paolo had many enemies in Cascia, but Rita’s influence over him eventually led him to be a better man. He even renounced a family feud between the Mancinis and Chiquis. Unfortunately, the feud between the Mancini and Cascia family grew turbulent and one of Paolo’s allies betrayed and killed him while returning home from work.

Following her husband’s death, Rita gave his murderers a public pardon, but Paolo’s brother, Bernardo, was still angry and encouraged Rita’s two sons, Giovanni Antonio and Paulo Maria, to join the feud. Under their uncle’s leadership, each boy became more and more like their father had been before Rita married him, and they wanted to avenge their father’s murder. Rita attempted to stop them. Tradition has it that she often pointed out to them the image of the crucified Christ and the fact that he forgave those who killed him, but both of her sons were determined to revenge their slain father. Rita prayed to God, asking Him to take her sons before they lost their souls to the mortal sin of murder. One year later, her prayers were answered when both of her sons fell prey to dysentery and died.

Despite her great burden, she could still thank God that they had died in peace, free of the poison of murder to which hatred and revenge might have otherwise drawn them.

Following these tragedies, Rita placed her trust in God, accepting them and relying on her deep faith to find her way. After eighteen years of marriage, Rita felt called to a second but familiar vocation: to religious life in the Augustinian convent.

Points for reflection:

Rita married a difficult man but was able to convert him through prayers before he died. How do you handle difficult persons in your family/home? Also, when inflicted with ills from another, do you seek revenge and encourage others to avenge the harm, or do you follow the path of Christ’s mercy/forgiveness as Rita did and encouraged her two sons to follow?

DAY 3 PRAYER

Glorious St Rita, you wanted the best for your sons even if it meant their death. Help all mothers, fathers and guardians of difficult children and teenagers to pray for them, and to entrust them to God’s providence and mercy.

Relying then upon thy merits before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray thee obtain for us our request for the mothers of difficult children and teenagers (now, mention your particular intention). We honour thy perfect union with the Divine Will, thy heroic sufferings during thy married life, the consolation thou did experience at the conversion of thy husband, the sacrifice of thy children rather than see them grievously offend God, thy miraculous entrance into the convent, thy severe penances and thrice daily bloody scourgings, thy suffering caused by the wound thou did receive from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour, thy divine love which consumed thy heart, that remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament on which alone thou did exist for four years, the happiness with which thou did part from thy trials to join thy Divine Spouse, the perfect example thou gave to people of every state of life.
