O God, come to my aid+
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
—Pause for an “Examination of Conscience”—
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
(strike breast) through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Daily Prayer to St. Cecilia
St. Cecilia, I confide in your intercession because you generously offered your life as a sacrifice for the love of Jesus, to whom you were devoted with your whole heart and soul. Jesus will not refuse your prayers. Beg Jesus to grant me this favour: [Mention your need(s) here…] For the sake of Jesus Christ, who filled your heart with pure and heroic love, who crowned you with the glorious crown of martyrdom, who permitted your body to remain incorrupt through these many centuries, and who willed that your memory be praised by the Church at every Holy Day Mass, I earnestly ask you to intercede for me. I resign myself entirely to the Holy Will of God. Help me to imitate your faith and love of God, that I may be ready to make any sacrifice for my Catholic faith. Through your prayers may I someday reach heaven and praise with you the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the loving Spouse of your soul and mine. Amen.
(Life of Saint Cecilia)
(Introduction: fact or fiction)?
Cecilia, also known as Saint Cecilia, (Latin: Sancta Caecilia, English: alternate spelling – Cecelia) is the patroness of musicians. It is written that as the musicians played at her wedding she “sang in her heart to the Lord”. Her feast day is celebrated in the Latin Catholic, Eastern Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches and in some churches of the Anglican Communion on November 22. She is one of seven women, in addition to the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass in the Roman Catholic Church.
While the details of her story are apparently fictional (fictional in the sense that some aspects do not seem to be accurately documented and stated), her existence and martyrdom are considered a historical fact. According to Johann Peter Kirsch, while some details bear the mark of a pious romance, like so many other similar accounts compiled in the fifth and sixth century, the existence of the martyr (Cecilia) is a historical fact. The relation between Cecilia and Valerian, Tiburtius, and Maximus, mentioned in the Acts of the Martyrs, has some historical foundation. She is said to have been beheaded with a sword. An early church, Santa Cecilia, was founded in the 3rd century by Pope Urban I in the Trastevere section of Rome, reputedly on the site of the house in which she lived. Her feast day has been celebrated since about the fourth century. A number of musical compositions are dedicated to her, and her feast day has become the occasion for concerts and musical festivals.
Pause and reflect for a moment…
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
DAY 2 PRAYER
Saint Cecilia, your wedding featured music that you could not hear, as you sat apart and sang to the Lord in your heart. You have inspired poets and musicians with sublime words and songs that have sewn the Gospel in millions of ears:
“Orpheus could lead the savage race,
And trees uprooted left their place
Sequacious of the lyre:
But bright Cecilia raised the wonder higher:
When to her organ vocal breath was given
An Angel heard, and straight appeared –
Mistaking Earth for Heaven.”
Oh, Saint Cecilia, Orpheus’ lute made trees, but you produced living stones and disciples. Help us to sing in our hearts and with our voices so that we may live the Gospels with joy at all times.
We seek your prayers for… (Mention your intentions here…) St. Cecilia, we ask for your intercession because you generously offered your life for the love of Jesus, who you were devoted to with your heart and soul. Graciously hear our prayers. Amen.
Our Father…3 Hail Marys…Glory be…
