A POWERFUL NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT TO BEGIN THE YEAR 2021: DAY 4 – THE GIFT OF FORTITUDE

(Anytime in the Morning/Afternoon)

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Hymn

Spirit of God in the clear running water
Blowing to greatness the trees on the hill.
Spirit of God in the finger of morning:
Fill the earth, bring it to birth,
And blow where you will.
Blow, blow, blow till I be
But the breath of the Spirit blowing in me.

I saw the scar of a year that lay dying
Heard the lament of a lone whippoorwill.
Spirit of God, see that cloud crying:
Fill the earth, bring it to birth,
And blow where you will.
Blow, blow, blow till I be
But the breath of the Spirit blowing in me.

Spirit of God every man’s heart is lonely
Watching and waiting and hungry until
Spirit of God, man longs that you only
Fill the earth, bring it to birth,
And blow where you will.
Blow, blow, blow till I be
But the breath of the Spirit blowing in me.

Catholic Prayer 'Come, Holy Spirit'ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

On my knees, I before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You, I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion, to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant heareth.” Amen.

SCRIPTURAL READING: Ezekiel 36:26-27

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

The Word of the Lord…

MEDITATION

The term ‘fortitude’ is derived from the Latin ‘fortis,’ meaning strong, powerful, vigorous, steadfast, courageous, and brave; the noun fortitude primarily means strength, firmness, durability, courage, bravery, power and being valiant. Biblically, “fortitude is the strength of character that enables a person to endure pain or adversity with courage. Although the word fortitude is rarely used in the most popular versions of the Bible, the concept is addressed often. Instead of fortitude, the word endurance, strength, power, or perseverance is used more often in our Bibles. Not only is fortitude a great quality, but we are commanded to pursue it (cf. 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:3; 1 Peter 1:5–6).” Today’s Lucan text  (in the Acts of the Apostles) clearly demonstrates that fortitude comes from the Holy Spirit. St. Luke talks of the Apostles as receiving power (fortitude) when the Holy Spirit comes upon them – as Jesus promised them. Dear friends in Christ, no matter what you pass through in life, be it adversities, tribulations, trials, persecutions, hardships, financial constraints, spiritual dryness, lack of basic needs, sicknesses, bearing the crosses of others, etc., you are called to cooperate with grace in recognizing the Spirit of fortitude and feel the awesome presence of God’s Holy Spirit; for God cannot allow us to be tempted beyond our limits.

Pause for a moment and reflect…

DAY 4 PRAYER

O God, Who today by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, give us, by the light of the same Holy Spirit, a love for what is right and just, a constant enjoyment of His comforts, and the gift of His fortitude. Grant, O Holy Spirit, that I may strive to learn more of my faith; that I may ever be conscious that reason in all its human magnificence is capable of grasping but a glimpse of the reality that is God. Pray that I may accept as the motto of my life: “All for the greater glory of God” and grant me the favour I so earnestly seek in this novena (State your request here…) if it be in accordance with Your Holy Will. Amen.

La Vida Consagrada: Esposada a Cristo…Seeking the Face of God | Waking Up the WorldPRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence toward God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples, and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

Our Father… Hail Mary…. (Glory be….X7)

Concluding Meditation/Prayer

By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened against natural fear, and supported to the end in the performance of duty. Fortitude imparts to the will an impulse and energy which move it to undertake without hesitancy the most arduous tasks, to face dangers, to trample under foot human respect, and to endure without complaint the slow martyrdom of even lifelong tribulation. He that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.

Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude, uphold my soul in time of trouble and adversity, sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give me courage against all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be overcome and separated from Thee, my God and greatest Good. Amen.

Shalom!
