NOVENA FOR THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: DAY 9 (For all Priests and Religious)

MORNING PRAYERS

V. O God, come to my aid+
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hymn
1. Ave, Maria! O Maiden, O Mother,”
proudly thy children are calling on thee!
Thine are the graces unclaimed by another,
Sinless and beautiful, star of the sea!

Chorus:
Mater amabilis, ora pro nobis!
Pray for thy children who call upon thee;
Ave, sanctissima! Ave, purissima!
Sinless and beautiful, star of the sea!

2. Ave, Maria! thy children are kneeling,
words of endearment are murmured to thee;
softly thy spirit upon us is stealing,
Sinless and beautiful, star of the sea!

3. Ave, Maria! thou portal of heaven,
harbour of refuge, to thee, do we flee;
lost in the darkness, by stormy winds driven,
Sinless and beautiful, star of the sea!

Scriptural Meditation
(Read the following passage and meditate gently on it)
EZEK 44:1-3
“Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the Sanctuary, which faces East; and it was shut. And He said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut. Only the Prince may sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; He shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out the same way”
The Word of the Lord…

Reflection
Several Old Testament imageries support the virginity ‘in partu,’ (virginity during the birth of Christ). We are faced today with an affirmation from the Prophet Ezekiel. In explaining this, I employ the explanations of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, respectively.

“Who is this gate (Ezekiel 44:1-4), if not Mary? Is it not closed because she is a virgin? Mary is the gate through which Christ entered this world, when He was brought forth in the virginal birth and the manner of His birth did not break the seals of virginity.” – Saint Ambrose of Milan (ca AD 390)

“It is written (Ezekiel 44, 2): ‘This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall pass through it. Because the Lord the God of Israel hath entered in by it…’ What means this closed gate in the house of the Lord, except that Mary is to be ever inviolate? What does it mean that ‘no man shall pass through it,’ save that Joseph shall not know her? And what is this – ‘The Lord alone enters in and goeth out by it,’ except that the Holy Ghost shall impregnate her, and that the Lord of Angels shall be born of her? And what means this – ‘It shall be shut for evermore,’ but that Mary is a Virgin before His birth, a Virgin in His birth, and a Virgin after His birth.” – Saint Augustine (ca AD 430)

Our Father…3 Hail Marys… Glory be… (For the intentions of the Holy Father, Pope Francis; and for peace in Nigeria, especially the incessant killings in Southern Kaduna)

May the Divine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Blessing+
May the Lord bless + us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

(If possible, kindly accompany this novena with the Holy Rosary at any hour of the day, either 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 decades…)

NIGHT PRAYERS

(See Live Transmission with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on my Youtube channel: “Fr. Chinaka’s Reflections”)

V. O God, come to my aid
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Examination of conscience
(This is an excellent opportunity to examine one’s way of life throughout the course of the day for about 2 minutes)

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
You came to call sinners: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Hymn
Mary, crowned with living light,
temple of the Lord,
place of peace and holiness,
shelter of the Word.

Mystery of sinless life
in our fallen race,
free from shadow, you reflect
plentitude of grace.

Virgin-Mother of our God,
lift us when we fall,
Jesus named you on the Cross
Mother of us all.

Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
heaven sings Your praise,
Mary magnifies Your name
through eternal days.

Scriptural Meditation
Read the following passage and meditate gently on it:
2 SAM 6:9
David feared the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
The Word of the Lord…

(Brief Reflection: via the Youtube Channel)

Prayer
Oh, Blessed Virgin Mary! Chosen and destined by the majestic Trinity to be the Mother of the only begotten Son of the Father, announced by the prophets, expected from the Patriarchs, and desired by all people; Tabernacle and living Temple of the Holy Spirit, Sun without spot, because you were conceived without original sin, Lady of heaven and earth, Queen of angels; we humbly come before you, and rejoice in the solemn annual celebration of your joyful birth; and from the depths of our hearts, we beseech you to be graciously born spiritually in our souls, so that we may be captivated by your love and sweetness, may we always remain united to your so sweet and loving heart.

Today, we beseech thy maternal intercession for all Priests and Religious all over the world. Grant them the grace of perseverance as they follow Christ more closely through by living out the gospel values. May they be continually blessed as they minister and bless the people of God in their various apostolates. Fill them with the spirit of wisdom and strength, and protect them physically and spiritually. May they continually grow in discernment and love, following the example of our Lord and Saviour, as One who did not come to be served but to serve. O dearest Mother, through your prayers and intercessions, may they never waver in faith, and may your presence be with them throughout their life’s journey on earth, in order that they may attain the everlasting joys of heaven at the end of their lives. Amen

Our Father…10 Hail Marys…(State your private intentions)…Glory be…

The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

May the Divine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament…

Let us pray.
Grant that we, your servants, Lord
may enjoy unfailing health of mind and body,
and through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her glory
free us from our sorrows in this world
and give us eternal happiness in the next.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing+
The Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
Amen.

Final Anthem to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Hail holy Queen enthroned above,
Oh, Maria!
Hail mother of Mercy and of Love,
Oh, Maria!
Triumph all ye cherubim!
Sing with us ye seraphim!
Heaven and Earth, resound the hymn!
