NOVENA FOR THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: DAY 8 (For the intentions of the Church and those of the Holy Father)

MORNING PRAYERS

V. O God, come to my aid+
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hymn

Maiden, yet a mother,
Daughter of thy Son,
High beyond all other,
Lowlier is non;

Thou the consummation
Planned by God’s decree,
When our lost creation
Nobler rose in thee!

Lady, lest our vision,
Striving heavn’nward, fail,
Still let thy petition
With thy Son prevail,

Unto Whom all merit,
Pow’r and majesty
With the Holy Spirit
And the Father be.

Scriptural Meditation
(Read the following passage and meditate gently on it)
Matthew 1:18-25
Now, this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.
The Word of the Lord…

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Prayer
Oh, Blessed Virgin Mary! Chosen and destined by the majestic Trinity to be the Mother of the only begotten Son of the Father, announced by the prophets, expected from the Patriarchs, and desired by all people; Tabernacle and living Temple of the Holy Spirit, Sun without spot, because you were conceived without original sin, Lady of heaven and earth, Queen of angels; we humbly come before you, and rejoice in the solemn annual celebration of your joyful birth; and from the depths of our hearts, we beseech you to be graciously born spiritually in our souls, so that we may be captivated by your love and sweetness, may we always remain united to your so sweet and loving heart.

Today, we beseech your maternal intercession on behalf of our dear Mother Church which spreads throughout the world, under the visible care of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, whom your beloved Son has chosen as His Vicar and chief Shepherd to preside over His Church. We beg You to grant him a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love to guide his flock with love and watchful care, especially for the sick, the poor and the vulnerable. Help him edify, both by word and example, those over whom he has charge, that he may reach everlasting life together with the flock entrusted to him, building God’s church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world.

Our Father…10 Hail Marys…(State your private intentions)…Glory be…

The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

May the Divine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Let us pray.
Grant that we, your servants, Lord
may enjoy unfailing health of mind and body,
and through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her glory
free us from our sorrows in this world
and give us eternal happiness in the next.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing+
May the Lord bless + us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

(If possible, kindly accompany this novena with the Holy Rosary at any hour of the day, either 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 decades…)

NIGHT PRAYERS

V. O God, come to my aid
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Examination of conscience
(This is an excellent opportunity to examine one’s way of life throughout the course of the day for about 2 minutes)

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
You came to call sinners: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Hymn

(Mary’s Magnificat)

My soul now glorifies
the Lord Who is my Saviour
rejoice for who am I
that God has shown me favour.

The world shall call me “blessed”
and ponder on my story
in me is manifest
God’s greatness and His glory.

For those who are His friends
and keep His laws as holy
His mercy never ends
and He exalts the lowly.

But by His power the great
the proud the self-conceited
the kings who sit in state
are humbled and defeated.

He feeds the starving poor
He guards His holy nation
fulfilling what He swore
long since in revelation.

Then glorify with me
the Lord who is my Saviour
One Holy Trinity
forever and forever.

Scriptural Meditation
Read the following passage and meditate gently on it:
Matthew 2:13-14
After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and do away with him.’ So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt.
The Word of the Lord…

Our Father…3 Hail Marys… Glory be… (For the intentions of the Holy Father, Pope Francis; and for peace in Nigeria, especially the incessant killings in Southern Kaduna)

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

May the Divine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Blessing+
The Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
Amen.

Final Anthem to the Blessed Virgin Mary

I am all yours,
My Queen and Mother,
And all I have is yours
Ave Maria, Ave Maria!!

OR

O Mother and lover of our souls,
The day is far spent,
Fill us with the divine graces,
That we may sleep in peace,
and rise with joy to praise your Son
without failing to honour you,
singing your Ave as Gabriel did
Our Mother and Queen…
